Celebrate: The 100th birthday of The Gamble House Charles Greene with David and Mary Gamble, circa 1908 Charles & Henry Greene, design architects, and John and Peter Hall, master craftsmen and contractors, delivered The Gamble House to its owners, David and Mary Gamble, in 1909. The house was lived in by the Gamble family for over 50 years, and given by them to the City of Pasadena in partnership with USC School of Architecture in 1966. 100 years after construction we are celebrating the centennial of this Arts and Crafts icon. To honor the century landmark of this architectural jewel and the people who made it a reality, several public exhibitions are planned. On this page:
August 16, 2008 – January 4, 2009 Now open Living Beautifully: Greene & Greene in PasadenaThis will be an exhibition of personal objects, documents and family photographs exploring the lives of Charles and Henry Greene, and their collaborators. Drafting instruments, wood carving tools, shop drawings, and other artifacts of the partnership will show how the Greenes worked with their craftsmen, including John and Peter Hall. » More info about Living Beautifully: Greene and Greene in Pasadena. ALSO SHOWING: "The Art and Craft of Textile Design 1860-1920," a complementary exhibit in the same building, will focus on the design elements which influenced textile production. September 28, 2008 – January 4, 2009 Now open Seeing Greene & Greene: Architecture in PhotographsPasadena Museum of California Art The exhibition interprets the architecture and landscape work of Greene & Greene through the lenses of 20th century photographers. Images, many being seen for the first time in public, span the century from soft-focus pictorialism, to architectural spatial relationships, to fine art photography. Photographers include Leroy Hulbert, Maynard Parker, Minor White, William Current and others. » See the press release from the Pasadena Museum of California Art October 18, 2008 – January 26, 2009 A “New and Native” Beauty: The Art and Craft of Greene & GreeneAt The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens Left: Entry hall door, Jennie Reeve house. Right: Blacker house living room lamp.And traveling to… Museum of Fine Arts, Boston This landmark exhibition celebrating the work of Greene & Greene is a partnership between The Gamble House and The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens (more info), and will feature 140 works designed by the Greenes covering the breadth and depth of their careers. The pieces to be displayed come from private and institutional lenders and, in some instances, have never been seen by the public. They include stained glass, metalwork, textiles, drawings, archival photographs, and virtuoso wood-carving and decorative inlay designed by the Greenes and executed by the master craftsmen with whom they were associated. The exhibition is co-curated by Edward R. Bosley, James N. Gamble Director of The Gamble House, and Anne E. Mallek, Curator of The Gamble House. After the initial run the exhibition will travel to Washington, DC and Boston, MA. Cover of the forthcoming book. A new book of 11 scholarly essays, under the same title as the exhibition, will be published by Merrell Publishers Ltd. in the fall, to coincide with the exhibition's opening. We would also like to announce: October 17-19, 2008 The 17th Annual Craftsman WeekendPasadena Heritage will present its annual Craftsman Weekend on October 17-19, 2008. Celebrating its 17th year this fall, Craftsman Weekend is the largest and most comprehensive salute to the Arts & Crafts Movement in the Western United States. The Weekend’s offerings will include a tours of significant Craftsman-era houses and exhibits by antique dealers specializing in the Arts & Crafts Movement.
