Pasadena, CA - As part of a city-wide centennial celebration of architects and brothers Charles and Henry Greene’s masterpiece The Gamble House, the Pasadena Museum of California Art presents Seeing Greene & Greene: Architecture in Photographs curated by Karen Sinsheimer. Presented through the lens of some of the twentieth century’s leading photographers of art and architecture, this exhibition is conceived as a different take on the architectural work of the architects who are best known for creating iconic bungalow style houses as part of the American Arts and Crafts movement.

Attracted by the special qualities of the Greenes’ architecture and design, each photographer uses his own historical perspective to capture and interpret the architects’ work. The resulting collection of images reveals the evolution of Greene and Greene’s pioneering significance recorded through the years.

The selection of approximately 75 photographs will span over fifty years, from 1915 through the 1970s and includes work by William R. Current, Johan Hagemeyer, Frances Benjamin Johnston, Frederick Martin, Maynard Parker, Julius Shulman, Minor White, and Morgan Yost. Of these remarkable photographs, 11 are on loan from the renowned collection at the Avery Architectural and Fine Art Library of Columbia University.

The Greenes established their architectural firm in Pasadena in 1894; the excitement about their legacy and the 100 year milestone extends to the rest of the Pasadena community. The Huntington Library is presenting A "New and Native" Beauty: The Art and Craft of Greene and Green (www.Huntington.org) , and the Pasadena History Museum is presenting Living Beautifully: Greene & Greene in Pasadena (www.pasadenahistory.org).

Karen Sinsheimer is the curator of Photography at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. This exhibition is made possible in part by the Friends of The Gamble House, Pasadena Arts & Culture Commission and the City of Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division, and the Ann Peppers Foundation. In-kind support has been generously provided by Yvonne and Shawn Speck of Shawn Speck Picture Frames.
