EXPLORING GREENE & GREENE

As the only work of Greene & Greene open to the public, the Gamble House has long served as a gateway to the study of the architects. Those interested in Greene & Greene will find many resources to explore, whether for personal curiosity and inspiration, school projects, or advanced research.

Greene & Greene Spotlight Talks

Join docents from the Gamble House on the second Saturday of the month for spotlight talks in the Greene & Greene gallery at The Huntington to explore the history, design, and materials of the works of Charles and Henry Greene.

Talks are FREE with admission to the Huntington and take place at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.

GREENE & GREENE COLLECTION

THE HUNTINGTON LIBRARY

Beginning as a collection of drawings, records, and photographs retained by the Gamble family, the Greene & Greene Collection expanded through gifts from over 280 donors over more than 50 years. The collection was given by the Gamble House Conservancy to The Huntington Library in 2020, where it is now available to researchers by appointment.

GREENE AND GREENE DIGITAL ARCHIVE

USC DIGITAL LIBRARIES

Many items from the Greene & Greene Collection at the Huntington are available online through USC Digital Libraries, a legacy of the Gamble House’s long-time association with the USC School of Architecture. Online items include photographs, sketches and notebooks, architectural drawings, letters, and professional photographs of Greene & Greene furnishings from the Gamble House collection.

GREENE & GREENE ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS AND RECORDS COLLECTION

AVERY ARCHITECTURAL AND FINE ARTS LIBRARY, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

This is the largest collection of materials relating to the architects’ work, comprising about 4,800 drawings and 537 project photographs. These records originated as project files in the firm’s offices. Many drawings and photographs listed by project can be accessed online.

THE CHARLES SUMNER GREENE COLLECTION

COLLEGE OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN ARCHIVES, UC BERKELEY

This collection includes correspondence with family members, records of Charles Greene’s travels, professional correspondence, and catalogs and samples from vendors and craftsmen. Much of the collection came from Charles Greene’s studio in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, after his death. No items are available for online viewing, but researchers may arrange to access the materials in person.
