A Practice Declines

1912

After 1911, the Greene and Greene practice declines due to the hight prices of their commissions and frequent schedule overruns. In response to a complaint from client Charles Pratt, Charles Green defends himself, writing, “I have read [your letter] carefully and realize in full measure the discontent expressed in it. I also feel that some further explanation is due to your and in justice to me… The work itself took months to execute and the best years of my life went to develop this style… My plea is not so much for the fact as for the principle-not so much for the artist as the art may find expression.”
