About the gamble house
The Gamble House (1908) is an internationally recognized masterpiece of the American Arts and Crafts movement. Built for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter and Gamble Company, the house is the most complete and original example of the work of architects Charles and Henry Greene. This Local, State, and National Historic Landmark is owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by The Gamble House Conservancy.
Wood is celebrated inside and out through expressed structure and joinery and fine finishes and materials that shape the architecture and interiors of the house. You cannot imagine the beauty and quality of craftsmanship until you step inside.
People are drawn to the Gamble House for several reasons. For some it’s a bucket list destination because of their love of architecture or the Arts and Crafts movement. For others, the house is a source of renewal and inspiration. And some visit for the first time because the house was featured in the beloved film, Back to the Future. No matter your reason for visiting, we’re happy to see you at our front door for what we hope will be the first of many visits.
The Gamble House Bookstore, located in the original garage adjacent to the house, is known for its extensive collections of books, decorative arts, and gifts relating to Greene & Greene, the Arts and Crafts movement, Pasadena, and contemporary crafts.
THE MISSION AND PURPOSE OF THE GAMBLE HOUSE CONSERVANCY
The mission of The Gamble House Conservancy is to inspire the public’s appreciation and understanding of architecture as a fine art through the example of The Gamble House, the most complete and best-preserved work of American Arts and Crafts architects Charles and Henry Greene.
This is achieved by:
- Preserving the Gamble House, its furnishings, collection, and grounds to nationally-recognized standards of conservation.
- Providing an exemplary program of public access that interprets the architecture of the Gamble House, and its collections, in relevant, educational and engaging ways.
- Providing education programs that enhance the public’s understanding of the Gamble House within the context of architectural and cultural history.
- Pursuing a mutually supportive relationship with the City of Pasadena in the interest of meeting our mission and adhering to the 1966 family gift agreement.
The Conservancy oversees fundraising to support and sustain the Gamble House, its ongoing operations and programming, and to fund endowments for key staff positions and periodic major restoration, preservation, and maintenance initiatives. Support in any amount makes a difference. Support in any amount makes a difference and is truly appreciated.

BECOME A GAMBLE HOUSE DOCENT
AND LEAD OUR TOURS
Since the house opened to the public in 1966, tours have been conducted by specially trained docents who bring the house to life. In addition to leading tours, docents assist with special events, serve as ambassadors of the house and the work of Charles and Henry Greene throughout the community, and enjoy special privileges.
Docents engage in meaningful work to support the mission of the Gamble House. We are looking for volunteers 18+ who can commit to two years of regular service. Fluency in more than one language is helpful, but not required. No previous arts experience is necessary as ongoing training and education is provided. Weekday, weekend, and evening shifts are available.
Interested in becoming a docent? Please complete the contact form and we’ll be in touch. Questions? Send us an email at info@gamblehouse.org.
Junior docent program
Under the guidance of Gamble House docents and staff, the year-long Junior Docent Program trains 30+ 7th and 8th grade students in the Pasadena Unified School District to conduct tours for 3rd grade classes. The program is part of the Pasadena Education Foundation’s “My Masterpieces”,” which brings over 1,000 students from local elementary schools each year to tour the Gamble House. Many Junior Docents fondly remember their own visits when they were 3rd graders and are excited to be a part of this tradition.
Junior Docents learn how to present to 3rd graders the house’s history and architecture by exploring form and function, architectural themes of space and design, and local history as it relates to the house. During training, guest speakers highlight topics of interest, and each Junior Docent receives a Handbook. Before they lead the 3rd grade tours, Junior Docents attend Graduation Day where they conduct tours for their families. Junior Docents expand their touring techniques after each 3rd grade tour when they meet with their adult mentors to discuss strategies for improvement and celebrate their successes.
As part of the Junior Docent program, 3rd graders have the opportunity to introduce their families to the Gamble House with a free return pass obtained through their elementary school.
Pathway program
The Pathway Docent Program is a recent extension of the Junior Docent Program that invites students who have participated as Junior Docents to continue touring at the Gamble House. Pathway Docents (8th grade and up) lead monthly 45-minute Family Tours, meant to introduce the Gamble House to children and their caregivers. They also offer support for free or low cost community touring events such as our annual family day, Crafting Memories and Museums of the Arroyo Day.
SCHOLARS-IN-RESIDENCE FELLOWShIP PROGRAM
The Gamble House Conservancy Scholars-in-Residence (SIR) Fellowship (originated in 1967) is open to fifth-year architecture students and graduate students in an architecture, arts, conservation, cultural studies, museum studies or history program. The SIR Fellowship is awarded to two students annually, providing residence in the Gamble House for an academic year in exchange for which the students provide support for events and assist with Gamble House projects.
2024-2025 Gamble House Scholars-in-Residence
We’re excited to have Faith Fullerton (M.Arch., USC) and Sam Malnati (MHC/MUP, USC) as the newest members of our stewardship community.
