EXPLORING GREENE & GREENE
As the only work of Greene & Greene open to the public, the Gamble House has long served as a gateway to the study of the architects. Those interested in Greene & Greene will find many resources to explore, whether for personal curiosity and inspiration, school projects, or advanced research.
Greene & Greene GALLERY
A permanent display of furniture, lighting, and other objects designed by Charles and Henry Greene has been on view in the Dorothy Collins Brown Wing of the Scott Gallery at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens for over 30 years. Bringing together the work of the firm from a period of more than 20 years from the collections of The Huntington, the Gamble House, and others, the gallery includes a recreation of the dining room of the Robinson house (1906) with a complete suite of its historic furnishings.
The furnishings displayed illustrate the architects’ collaboration with furniture maker John Hall, glass artists Sturdy-Lange Studios, and others responsible for executing their designs, resulting in the highest level of American craft in the early 20th century.
Greene & Greene Spotlight Talks
Join docents from the Gamble House on the second Saturday of the month for spotlight talks in the Greene & Greene gallery at The Huntington to explore the history, design, and materials of the works of Charles and Henry Greene.
Talks are FREE with admission to the Huntington and take place at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.
Researching Greene & Greene
Available research materials on the lives and work of Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene range from architectural drawings and sketches to historic photographs, notebooks and scrapbooks, professional and family letters, and artifacts.
A segment of the materials in some of the collections can be viewed online, as noted below. Collections focused on Greene & Greene are located mainly in the following repositories.
Floor plans, elevations, and a site plan of the Gamble House from February of 1908 were filed with the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and can be accessed through the Library of Congress website.
Please note that the Greene & Greene Virtual Archives was an online resource initiated over 20 years ago, and is no longer supported. Although the search fields do not function, users may click on a letter to see a list of projects starting with that letter. Basic descriptions of each project still reside on the site and may be accessed through the link for each project name.
