Bank Competition
Location not specified
1906

The Greenes took part in a Bank Competition for an unspecified location in 1906 for which they prepared only conceptual sketches. This project was sited on the short side of a trapezoidal block, resulting in an irregular footprint. There are several variations of layout in the plan. Some of the sketch plans clearly show the site divided into a bank with a vault, safe deposit area, and a large room for tellers. Others show the space sub-divided into separate stores. Whether these latter drawings record an option or variation of the existing conditions is difficult to say. The exterior perspective sketch shows many Romanesque details: a large Richardsonian arch at street level, small round tower with a turret, a bell, and a clock at the corner, and a castellated parapet. The strong emphasis on the horizontal line of the facade as well as the suggestion of brick and castellated details give the bank the appropriate look of a stronghold.
