Dr. W. T. Bolton House, #1
Pasadena, California
1900
This first house for Dr. Bolton, with its barn-like gables,
signaled a shift in the Greenes’ designs away from fussy
late-Victorian exteriors and interiors to a more sober and simple
vocabulary. Rough sawn timbers, a cobblestone chimney, and rustic
built-in benches reflected the growing interest in Arts and
Crafts aesthetics. The simplicity of the floor plans showed
the client’s willingness to take advantage of the more
casual lifestyle that Southern California promised. Dr. Bolton
became a faithful client, commissioning a total of three houses
from the Greenes.
