Pasadena, California
1906
The Caroline de Forest house occupies a narrow but deep sloping
lot near the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena, California. A modest resort
cottage, the house was designed to take advantage of the sloping
site. A winding path leads from the sidewalk down the hill to
the front door at the side of the house, away from the street.
The entry opens to a combined living-dining room space and a
sun-porch facing the views at the rear. Secondary spaces, the
kitchen, a bath, and a sitting room are on the street side,
with additional bedrooms and a bath upstairs. The exterior's
shingled walls, bands of casement windows, deep eave overhang,
projecting rafter tails and beam-ends, typify the Craftsman
style developing in Pasadena. Miss de Forest, a first cousin
of Lockwood de Forest Sr., designer and business partner of
Louis Comfort Tiffany, maintained her primary residence in an
apartment in the Tiffany mansion on Madison Avenue in New York
City.
