Freeman A. Ford House
Pasadena, California
1906-08
Freeman A. Ford, vice-president of the Pasadena Ice Company,
commissioned a house by the Greenes in 1906. The plans called
for a courtyard house with a stucco finish and half-timbering
on the exterior walls of an upper level sleeping porch. Although
the final house differed from this original plan, it was built
with an elegant courtyard designed for privacy and finished
with tile pavers, brick steps, and a pebble-dash fountain. The
remarkable entrance door is a wooden frame in a stylized human
figure surrounding an art glass peacock-feather design in blue,
green and cream. The interior massing of the rooms and the Greene
designed details, fixtures, and ornaments only enhance the spectacular
views of the ravine and the hills. The house was completed in
1908.
