Mrs. Louise T. Halsted House
Pasadena, California
1905
In the winter of 1905, Charles and Henry Greene designed a home
for Mrs. Louise T. Halsted and her husband S. Hazard Halsted,
President of the Pasadena Ice Company. This house was the seventh
for the Greenes in the Park Place development and the character
of the neighborhood was beginning to be set by their “woodsy
aesthetic.” The Halsted house was one of their smaller
designs: a one-and-a-half story bungalow with one bedroom and
sun porch upstairs. Dark shaded privacy on the terrace was created
by the deep overhang of the eaves along the front elevation
of the house. The living room was the largest single space in
the bungalow. A fireplace and inglenook bench dominated the
room, and the ceiling was patterned with bands of dark-toned
wood. The dining room and living room were separated with double
glass doors to give the small house a continuous open space
from one end of the house to the other. Small alterations were
made in 1910 and an addition was put on in 1912. The Greenes
constructed a garage in 1914, and 1915 saw alterations to the
west bedrooms, dining room, and the addition of a trellis.
