Mrs. Louise A.F. Kelley House
San Jose, California
1929-31

Louise A. F. Kelley, (former client Martin Flavin’s mother) wanted a conservatory, tile fountain, and servant’s wing for her home, “Ar-Kel Villa,” in San Jose to be designed by Charles Greene. There were construction problems that resulted in an increasingly unhappy client. Lack of adequate instruction from Charles to the tile contractor, Solon & Schemmel, delayed tile installation and the glass walls of the conservatory leaked with the winter rains. The work wasn’t completed until the end of 1930 and the project was an example of the frustrations of the practice in Charles’ declining years.
