William M. Ladd House
Nordhoff (Ojai), California
1913
William Mead Ladd descended from one of the most prominent pioneer
families of Portland, Oregon, who had migrated during the California
Gold Rush. By 1913, building in stain-grade wood was already
on the wane, but Ladd’s timber-country background led
him to choose Greene & Greene to design a winter bungalow
in the Ojai valley. The straightforward linear design for the
1913 Ladd house is one of the firm’s most elegant architectural
solutions- -integrating the needs of the client with an aesthetic
response to the location. On the interior, the Greene &
Greene style is utilized in restrained and simple detail. The
living room is off the major axis of the bedroom wing to capture
and help define the outdoor terrace. The exteriors reflect the
rugged landscape of the Ojai Valley in such structures as a
stone bench on the outside face of the sandstone terrace wall,
the stone chimney and the way the large grounds of the property
are left in a natural state.
