Walter D. Valentine Houses
Altadena, California
1922-24
Executed in 1922-24, Henry Greene designed a new cottage, gate
portals and extensive alterations to existing cottages in Wild
Wood Park, a development owned by Walter D. Valentine at the
end of a private driveway. Henry Greene gave considerable attention
to this project perhaps due to the recent departure of Charles
Greene for Carmel-by-the-Sea. There was little work remaining
for the firm at this time. Henry Greene designed extensive additions
to the existing board-and-batten structure of the existing cottages
that included a new entryway, living room and terrace. These
additions proved Henry Greene’s sensitivity to the site
and naturalistic landscaping. The cottages’ exposed trusses
were decorated with wrought iron and hung with mica lanterns,
and the firm’s classic arroyo-stone and clinker-brink
chimneys were used. Henry proposed an English Arts and Crafts
design for a new cottage but Walter Valentine chose instead
an Americanized Craftsman idiom to match the older cottages.
