Dr. W. T. Bolton House, #3
Pasadena, California
1906

Dr. William T. Bolton, was a former client for whom the Greenes had designed two earlier houses. In the spring of 1906, he commissioned the design of another residence in Pasadena including furniture. The Bolton house design is distinguished by a bay of tall stairwell windows on the north elevation, allowing for much light and a minimum of direct sun. Casement windows in a variety of shapes and sizes respond to specific interior functions and give the house its unusual character. The floor plan shows a somewhat narrow rectangle, with the roof ridge positioned lengthwise to emphasize the length and horizontal mass of the house. The gable roof that runs the width of the house results in more interior space devoted to hallways for movement. Dr. Bolton died before the house could be occupied, with only the dining-room furniture completed. His widow rented the house, partly furnished, to Mrs. Belle Barlow Bush, who continued as the Greenes’ client, commissioning the remaining furniture and making alterations to the house in 1907.
