Altadena, California
1904-1905
By the end of 1904, Greene & Greene were preparing plans
for Mr. Bowen, an attorney from Baltimore, who had purchased
his rural property in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains
earlier in the year. The house, which also included a storehouse,
a chicken house and a corral, was to be a rustic ranch-like
retreat. The one-story L-plan referred to the California hacienda
tradition first used in the Bandini house of 1903, by having
two of the three bedrooms open only to the outdoors. The third
bedroom opens to the outdoors, but also communicates with
the rest of the house. A wrap-around terrace across the front
(south) is punctuated by battered boulder stone piers linked
by rails. A pergola partially covers the terrace to shelter
the front door. L-shaped window bays project from both front
corners of the house, allowing east, south and west light
into the principal rooms and providing interior window seats.
The house is clad in shingles; the more rustic outbuildings
are simple board and batten.
