South Pasadena, California
1903-04
Lucretia R. Garfield, widow of the assassinated president of
the United States, first contacted Charles Greene, a distant
relative, in May 1903 to build her a winter residence in South
Pasadena. Delayed by financial problems, the project was brought
back to life in 1904. Mrs. Garfield was very involved in the
design process and Charles had to compromise repeatedly on many
details. The result was a six-bedroom three-story Chalet form
house that sits on the edge of a hillside. On the back or downhill
side of the house are the kitchen, laundry porch, and servants’
rooms, all invisible to the upstairs household. There are banks
of casement windows on this south side, which makes the dining
room, breakfast alcove, sunporch, and living room light and
airy. In 1916, the Greenes made alterations to the house to
accommodate an elevator.
