Mrs. Thomas Palmer House Highland Park, California 1904 The alterations in question consist of an addition that is more than twice the size of the original house, which the drawings indicate only in outline. The original structure, nearly square, is joined to the new house by a passage that is cut into the back porch of the old house. Presumably the old house was turned into an office or other bedrooms as the living room, dining room, and service areas are located in the new addition. The roofline of the new house is set at an angle complementary to the older one and the two parts sit at right angles to the other. A piazza runs across the length of the new part, behind which on one side lies the passage connecting old to new. The plan is an awkward one, caused by trying to orient the common living spaces away from the old house. Two corner fireplaces, set back to back in an irregular way in the living room and dining room, enlivened the interiors.
